My Learning Space

Martha Hayes

Hello from Louisiana

I teach kindergarten at a Title I elementary school in Louisiana. If you are not familiar with that term, it designates us as a low income school qualifying us to receive considerable federal funding.

I started teaching in 1973. Whoa! I really don't relate to those first nine years of teaching. I did have a wonderful time teaching at Keystone School in San Antonio, Texas. The other years were in public school in Louisiana and S.A., Texas. The next eight years were dedicated to being a stay at home Mom. When the kids were all in school in 1990, I went back to teaching full time. I found lots of changes with the influence of theorists, the children's book explosion, and the pendulum in full swing dictating ideas on how to teach reading.

Now, here I am in 2008. I'm an avid fan and progressive advocate of educational computer technology. I am totally immersed in Web 2.0. I give my students safe surfing privileges on the Internet. Kids today must be allowed to satisfy their needs to construct their own knowledge through investigative Internet usage. .

I am interested in developing podcasting skills with lower elementary school students. I am interested in gathering information on other teachers' successes in this area.

My newest blog is http://marthahayes.blogspot.com/ which provides links to all of my sites.
